Organic cotton differs from regular cotton in three main ways: how much water it takes to grow, what's sprayed on it while it grows, and how strictly the process is checked and certified. Since we're having such a fine spell of weather, and we've just dropped the latest collection of our signature tees what better time to find out some of the 'whys' behind our choice of organic.
Water Usage
Conventional cotton is one of the thirstiest crops in agriculture, largely because it's grown in places reliant on heavy irrigation rather than rainfall. Organic cotton farming leans on rain-fed growing and healthier soil, which holds water more effectively and reduces the need for constant irrigation- a meaningful difference in regions where water scarcity is already a pressing issue.
No Synthetic Pesticides
This is where the gap is starkest. Regular cotton is treated with synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilisers to protect yields, and cotton alone accounts for a disproportionate share of global pesticide use relative to the farmland it occupies. Organic cotton is grown without these synthetic inputs, relying instead on crop rotation, natural pest control and composting. The result is a reduction in chemical exposure for the farmers handling the crop, and less residue in the finished fabric.
GOTS Certification
Anyone can call a garment "eco" or "natural." Not everyone can call it GOTS certified. The Global Organic Textile Standard audits the entire supply chain, from farm to finished garment- organic fibre content, restrictions on hazardous dyes and finishes, wastewater treatment, and fair labour practices at every stage. When a tee carries GOTS certification, it's been independently verified, not just self-described.
Is Organic Cotton Worth the Extra Cost?
Organic cotton typically costs more to grow and more to buy. The honest answer on whether that's justified is it depends what you're paying for. You're not just paying for softer fabric, you're paying for lower water demand, zero synthetic pesticide use, fairer farming practices, and a certification trail that holds the supply chain accountable.
Organic cotton isn't a lower-quality trade-off either. Done well, it holds its shape and softens with wear just as well as (and often better than) conventionally grown cotton, since the fibres haven't been chemically stressed during growth.
This is quiet luxury in its truest sense: not logos or price tags, but buying fewer things, choosing them well, and getting genuine, lasting enjoyment out of every piece. A well-made organic tee that earns its place in your wardrobe for years beats a drawer full of ones that don't.
