Out of Focus | Slow Fashion, Quality of Life and a Different Way of Doing Business
January in retail is often about clearing stock, chasing trends and pushing forward relentlessly. But we choose something different. For many years, January has been a deliberate pause. A long-standing arrangement that sees our full-time team take the entire month off- to travel, spend time with family and friends, rest, pursue their passions and return inspired. It’s not a novelty. It’s a cornerstone of how we do business.
Just as we design timeless pieces that last beyond seasons, we believe in building a company that values longevity- in clothing, creativity and people.
A Philosophy Rooted in Slow Fashion
JAM was built on the idea that quality takes time. From natural fibres and careful construction to limited production runs, our approach to luxury fashion mirrors how we treat our team: thoughtfully, humanely and with long-term wellbeing in mind.
After working hard through the busiest periods of the year- summers packed with holidaymakers, autumn busy with mini-breakers, and the Christmas rush - January offers our team the chance to properly reset. To step away from the shop floor and screens, and return with fresh perspective.
This year, our team members have travelled far and wide. From the beaches and surf of Australia to Morocco, carving through the Alps, and city-hopping across Europe, they’ve immersed themselves in landscapes, craftsmanship and culture- all of which quietly inform what we do back home.

Why This Matters
In a fast-moving fashion industry, burnout is often worn as a badge of honour. We don’t believe that creates better clothing, or better businesses.
By prioritising quality of life, we nurture a team that’s engaged, inspired and genuinely proud of the brand they represent. The result? Thoughtful design, authentic customer experiences and clothing that reflects care at every stage- from supply chain to shop floor.
This people-first mindset is deeply connected to our beliefs and values. You can’t create timeless, well-made clothing without respecting the people behind it.

Thank You to Our Part-Time Team
While our full-time team recharges, JAM continues thanks to our exceptional part-time team, who keep our stores running and orders flowing throughout the chilliest (wettest!) month. Their support ensures our customers receive the same considered service, and we’re hugely grateful for their commitment.
Looking Ahead
As January comes to a close, we already feel the energy building for the year ahead. We miss our team, can’t wait to welcome them back, and are excited to see how their experiences shape our year.
This slower pace isn’t a pause on progress- it’s part of our unique way of doing business. One that values people as much as product, and believes the best things- in fashion and in life- are made to last.
