Out of Focus | Our Location Guide to Falmouth

Falmouth is Cornwall’s capital of cool. It’s a compact university town that punches well above its size. There’s a proper arts scene, a food festival every May, and Falmouth Week in August, the largest sailing regatta in the south west. Stick around until September and there’s a beer festival too. It’s full of independent businesses and serious about its food, with a strong café culture and some of the best local suppliers in the county feeding its kitchens.

Our store sits right in the heart of it. If you’re visiting the town, pop in and check out our new arrivals. Here’s everything we’ve found to love about Falmouth, from the best bagels in town to a beach sauna you’ll want to build a whole day around.

GETTING HERE & PARKING

Park on Church Street. It’s two minutes’ walk from the store. If that’s full, try The Moor.

The car park behind Toast is the one locals use. It’s usually free when everywhere else is rammed. Worth remembering on a busy Saturday.

COFFEE & BREAKFAST

Dill’s Café — Well Lane

Less than a minute from the store. Dill’s is warm inside, the staff are lovely, and the coffees are huge. It’s all vegetarian, with something for everyone. Perfect for an iced coffee or a matcha, with a slice of toast on the side.

Max Bagels — Church Street

A two-minute walk for the best bagels in town. New York style, baked fresh every morning, with good coffee and staff who remember your order after one visit. This is the pace for bagels and coffee. Don’t miss the lox or the Reuben.

BREAKFAST & BRUNCH

Ragamuffins — Church Street

Three minutes from the store, small and cosy inside. Come for the sandwiches and their signature toasties.

LUNCH

Meat Counter — Arwenack Street

Falmouth’s original burger joint, three minutes from the store. Everything’s homemade and locally sourced, with good lunchtime deals. Perfect if you're after a relaxed lunch with a great children’s menu.

The Chic Pea — Arwenack Street

A takeaway and health food spot three minutes away, serving Middle Eastern and Mediterranean street food. The menu is long and everything’s good. The spot for healthier eating, a nice vibe, and some different flavours.

Habaneros — Quay Street

Five minutes from the store for the best burritos in Falmouth. Good for a quick bite by the harbour.

BAKERIES, DELIS & PICNIC SUPPLIES

Roskilly’s Ice Cream Parlour — Arwenack Street

Four minutes from the store. Roskilly’s is a Cornish dairy making over thirty flavours of ice cream, plus frozen kefirs and sorbets- when you need something on the go.

Baker Tom’s Bread — Church Street

Two minutes away for fresh bread, scones and pastries. Popular with people mooring at the marina, and with students, who get a 10% discount. Don't miss the scones!

BEST PICNIC SPOTS

Gyllyngvase Beach — 15 minute walk

Known to everyone simply as Gylly. Golden sand, turquoise water, sea views, plus a beach café, toilets and takeaway.

Tregoniggie Woodland — Conway Road, 1.1 miles

A nature reserve and popular woodland walk, with the Bickland stream running through it. Good for stretching your legs and finding shade in the summer months.

DINNER

Pomodoro — Arwenack Street

Two minutes from the store. Italian-Sardinian food in a small, intimate space, with staff who know the menu inside out. The must-try dish is the octopus linguine. It may be fine to turn up, but it’s small and fills quickly. Book if you can.

Bodega 18 — Arwenack Street

Five minutes away. The tapas menu changes regularly, drawing on flavours from across Spain, with a nod to co-owner Ren’s roots in Madrid and Barcelona. Don't miss their meatballs. Booking's advisable on weekend nights.

Pizzeria 42 — Bohl’s Yard, St Thomas Street

A five-minute drive. Indoor and outdoor seating, the biggest pizzas in Cornwall, and a strong cocktail menu. Any of the pizzas will blow your mind but especially the burrata. We recommended booking, but you can turn up, and they do takeaway too.

DRINKS & PUBS

Fives Cyderhouse — Grove Place

A ten-minute walk to a lively, friendly, big beer garden, right opposite the National Maritime Museum. A place for pints in the beer garden on a sunny day. It wouldn’t be Cornwall without a bit of cider-sampling.

Cha Cha Cha — Arwenack Street

Five minutes from the store. Latino-inspired food and cocktails, tucked in close to the harbour.  Unmissable amaretto sours and spicy margaritas. The vibe here is cosy with. good music, and a chilled crowd.

VIEWS & SUNSETS

Gylly Beach

Our pick for watching the sun go down. The sky turns orange and pink against the water. Go early and get right up to the water’s edge for the best seat in the house.

Grebe Beach

A short woodland walk from the village of Durgan brings you to blue water and open views. The path down is steep, and the beach is far enough off the main routes that it’s rarely crowded. Drive to the National Trust car park, then it’s a short hike from there.

St Mawes

A town with bars, restaurants and ice cream shops at the end of the Roseland peninsula, with a few good boutique hotels. Get there by ferry from Falmouth harbour.

WALKS & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Begin at Maenporth, a sheltered cove just south of town. Take the path behind the beachside restaurant The Cove and follow the coastal route as it climbs above the cliffs. On a clear day you can see The Lizard on the horizon.

Swanpool

Walk through town, past Gylly beach, and on to Swanpool beach. Best on a sunny day.

HIDDEN GEMS & INSIDER TIPS

Sunny Cove is a south-facing spot where dogs are welcome all year round.

Olfactory Coffee serves coffee from local roasters.

Falmouth runs a farmers’ market on The Moor every Tuesday, a general market on Thursdays and Saturdays, and the plastic-free Discovery Market on Event Square every Friday, with artisan goods, sustainable products and handmade crafts.

Kiln is an award-winning sauna on Gylly Beach. Book a session and go straight in the sea after.
